The market for agricultural lending (“agri” finance) products in South Africa amounts to well over R100bn in book value. Finance providers include the banks and agricultural finance companies – which are often the lending subsidiaries of large agricultural product and service providers (the former farming “co-ops”) – as well as incumbent specialist financial companies. The importance of efficient funding of commercial agriculture for the sector as well as for the overall economy and food security is self-evident.
